Run by composer Paul Clark, this lecture unpicks modern classical music. No musical training or prior knowledge is required to appreciate this musical lecture-adventure. It will explain how the big names in avant garde music - Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Stockhausen, Reich, Ligeti - relate to each other, and to the world or rock and electronica. It also attempts to unpick often misunderstood concepts in modern classical music such as serialism, minimalism and atonality.

Paul is co-artistic director of performance company Clod Ensemble in London & has written original music for all the company's productions to date, including Under Glass, An Anatomie in Four Quarters & Zero (all Sadler's Wells), Silver Swan (Tate Modern Turbine Hall, V&A Raphael Room, Royal Opera House) Red Ladies (Southbank Centre,  ICA & Museo Serralves, Portugal)  and Must (with Peggy Shaw, Public Theater, New York).

He has also written many unclassifiable music-based stage works, including The Weather Man (Opera North) and liebeslied/my suicides (ICA/Genesis Foundation) and Here All Night (Lincoln Center, New York, Brighton Festival).  He has written dozens of scores for theatre, from the fringe to the National Theatre in the UK and internationally across Europe and USA in especially with productions by Katie Mitchell and Gare St Lazare, Ireland.

He has collaborated with artists across the spectrum including TV/film makers  Arnaud Desplechin, John Michael McDonagh, Emily Young and Christine Gernon; performers Split Britches and Simon Amstell; philosophers Alexander Garcia Duttman and Bill Brewer ; artists Rut Blees Luxemburg, Mel Brimfield and Mark Aerial Waller;  sound designers Gareth Fry and Melanie Wilson; Video Designer Leo Warner;  writers David Sedaris and Alice Oswald; and with a huge range of musicians from Osterreichisches Ensemble fur Nueue Musik to Dangermouse, from the male chorus of the Welsh National Opera to The Fall.

Please note this seminar is being held at the National Theatre Studio, next to the Old Vic Theatre. That's a different place from the National Theatre where the Olivier, Lyttelton and Dorfman theatres are located.
