Join us for the third ASD Winter School, this time it's bigger than ever.

We are back at RCSSD in Swiss Cottage.

This event is organised by the ASD and is eligible for Travel Assistance*. Members can f ind out more via the Travel Assistance page of the website.

We will have 4 sessions a day in the Embassy Theatre, plus 4 Corporate Members each day will be on hand to explain their latest innovations.

This ticket will give you access to every event on Tuesday, giving you the freedom to take a look at all there is to offer.

Sound System Alignment with Phil Wright


Sound designer Phil Wright leads this session, A 101 for beginners on sound system optimisation, avoiding comb filtering and maximising intelligibility.

Phil Wright has enjoyed two and a half decades in the Pro Audio Industry, specialising as a Sound Designer for large scale Classical / Concert / Broadcast / Dance / Cinema & Operatic productions.

After training at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Phil spent the early part of his career working at Sound By Design Ltd, during which time he handled the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in- house sound contract. From 2000-2012 Phil also managed the SBD team handling the BBC Proms live sound requirements.

In 2012 Phil went freelance to concentrate on the design & mixing side of his career, and Phil Wright Sound Limited was founded. In this new role Phil has continued to work with artistes, producers and companies of repute to produce award winning productions around the globe.

Recent credits include:

L-Acoustics

  

Join Marcus Ross and Julien Laval, the team from L'Acoustics as they introduce you to the L-ISA System. 

L-ISA technology enables us to create and deliver new multidimensional sound experiences for live and recorded productions. More than just audio processing, L-Acoustics presents a comprehensive ecosystem of audio tools and design technics that provide an extremely natural and vivid experience that heightens emotion and invites the listener inside the music.

Marcus Ross will present how Blue Man Group works with L-ISA at Astor Place Theatre located in the NoHo section of Manhattan.

Marcus Ross has over 30 years of experience in professional audio

He has been monitor engineer for many bands, including Slayer and The Black Crowes, FOH for Patti LaBelle, System Designer and Crew Chief for Van Halen; was Lead Audio for multiple Broadway touring shows ranging from The Producers and Spamalot to the one-man shows, such as, 700 Sundays with Billy Crystal; and most recently has worked as the Resident Designer for Blue Man Productions.

Marcus has recently completed a Master’s Certificate in Music Production from Berklee College of Music. He has maintained various certifications from manufacturers in the industry and was an audio consultant for L-Acoustics prior to joining the company full time as the Head of Application, Touring - US and Canada.

Julien Laval supports L-Acoustics installations around the globe, ensuring that they achieve the optimum sound solution for their specific venue.Julien has worked in various fields of acoustic engineering, including mobile phones and voice recognition applications, as well as medical imaging.

Hailing from Lyon, Julien studied acoustics and physics at the Université du Maine – Le Mans before continuing his studies in acoustic engineering, obtaining a Bachelor of science (1:1) from the University of Southampton. He completed his studies with a Master of Science in acoustics and signal processing.

Scott Willsallen and his team from Auditoria have designed and delivered the sound for more Olympic Games Ceremonies than any other consultancy. They even have a show at the Pyramids of Giza. Find out more about their work here.

Using examples of real projects Scott will discuss the complexities of designing immersive audio systems for small and large audiences. The session will look at creative benefits of surround and overhead loudspeakers, control system design for flexibility and redundancy and talk through how the speed of sound impacts larger scale systems. It will also cover best practice design fundamentals with example projects Scott and his team have recently completed.

Vectorworks: Planning your systems.

Tom White, UK Industry Specialist for Vectorworks, will be introducing ConnectCAD, the latest addition to the Vectorworks family. ConnectCAD is a systems design solution to help you keep track of the components of any interconnected system from Audio and Video to IT and Networking. The software gives designers the tools to create customisable schematic documents, patch worksheets, equipment lists and design 2D and 3D rack layouts. ConnectCAD also tracks all of your changes live, so if you change a patch on the spreadsheet then you can force the visual schematic to update automatically. Enabling you to quickly create and edit beautiful, easy to read signal flow diagrams.

Travel Assistance Scheme

If you are an ASD member living more than 50 miles from where the ASD are holding a training session, the ASD may pay part of your travel costs to get you there.

Professional, Associate and NCO members may receive 33% of the cost of the price paid for rail travel, up to the cost of 33% of a standard saver return rail fare.

Future Professional members may receive 50% of the cost of the price paid for rail travel, up to the cost of 50% of a standard saver return rail fare with a Young Persons Rail Card.

If you travel by means other than train, please submit relevant receipts, but the maximums above will still apply.
